Learn the history behind conversion therapy and research on how this pseudoscientific practice was debunked

About the Course

In 2020 the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis posted an Expression of Concern regarding Rekers & Lovaas (1973) as a step in acknowledging behavior analysis’s complicity in the pseudoscience of conversion therapy. This week we’re joined by special guests, Drs. Sarah Campau and Matthew Capriotti, as well as Book Club Guy, Alan Haberman, to talk about what comes next. We review the controversy over the original paper, discuss public policy around supporting the LGBTQ+ community, and start planning how behavior analysis can kickstart new research that benefits sexual and gender minorities. For more on the history of conversion therapy, Dr. Campau suggests the UnErased podcast. This episode is available for 1.0 TRAUMA-INFORMED QABA (1.0 LEARNING BACB).

Meet Your Podcast Guests

Dr. Sarah Campau is a behavior analyst and PhD student at the University of Arkansas. She specializes working with adults with significant behavioral challenges. Sarah’s research interests include specialized sex education and LGBTQ+ advocacy for persons with disabilities. Dr. Matthew Capriotti has studied behavioral, non-drug treatments for Tourette Syndrome and other chronic tic disorders. He has done some other work looking at these disorders more broadly; some of this has involved looking at the nuances of how tic disorders work (i.e., disease processes), in order to understand how we might build better treatments. His work has also looked into how things other than behavioral therapy might be useful in improving the lives of people with these problems.  His second area of research concerns the health of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) people. He is interested in both mental and physical health. This work looks at how social factors (e.g., discrimination, stigma, etc) are linked to health outcomes for LGBTQ+ people. In addition, my colleagues and he works to understand what promotes resilience for LGBTQ folks who are exposed to these harmful social forces, but thrive nonetheless. We study these things in order to pave roads for better wellness programs for LGBTQ+ people, as well as better treatments for mental health problems when they do occur. Alan Haberman, M.Ed., BCBA is a behavior treatment therapist who recently passed his BCBA exam. Formerly a special educator, he values working with clients and families to build skills for independence and functional living. Alan’s current scope of practice is ABA interventions for autism spectrum disorder and developmental disabilities. His professional interests include Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Interventions, ACT/RFT, and queer & neurodivergent responses to behaviorism. In his spare time, he is the ABA Inside Track “Book Club Guy”.
